ABOUT ME

Hi! My name's Chris Bowling. I'm a reporter, designer and photographer based in Omaha, Nebraska.

WORDS

I've been reporting and writing since joining my high school newsmagazine in my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio since 2011. Since then I've reported at some of the country's biggest dailies writing about:

  • the fraught relationship between mental health and criminal justice in Nebraska
  • cultural genocide and the fight for freedom on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation
  • how weak code enforcement allows Omaha landlords to avoid discipline and harm tenants
  • two Native American mothers in rural Nebraska suing their school district after an employee cuts their daughters’ hair — twice — against the family’s wishes and tribal customs which was published in USA Today and sparked legislative action
  • Omaha's weak citizen-police oversight board which, as I uncovered, has little power to influence public safety
  • identifying old neighborhood agreements that prohibited non-white people from living in certain areas of Omaha — research that's been important in other cities for establishing evidence for reperations
  • how a lack of political action on climate change is pushing young Nebraskans out of the state
  • how the City of Omaha misuses tax breaks intended for low-income community for private development to bolster existing economic centers.
